Pneumatic conveying systems utilize a blower air source to move dry bulk materials through stainless steel pipes from one point to another. Materials being moved require either negative or positive air pressure. In either case a difference in pressure is caused to exist between the material feed point and the delivery point. The feed point is at a higher pressure than the delivery point, the air moves naturally to the point of lower pressure.

Understanding Pneumatic Conveying Systems

The qualities of the material to be conveyed in a pneumatic system determine the amount of air flow or air flow rate that is required. Different materials require different air velocities (speeds) to achieve movement through a conveying line. This air velocity requirement is usually called the pick-up velocity or terminal velocity.

Pneumatic Conveying systems can differ in air velocities allowing an appropriate flowability rate for the exact material required and the travel path. Conveying distances, the number of bends in the piping, the width of piping, venting capabilities of the receiving tank are among the many factors that impact the flow rate and the operating pressure of the system.
